Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Aimee Monihan graduated from CSU with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management (with a Minor in Spanish). She began working for Marriott and before long started traveling throughout Latin America. While spending time in Costa Rica, she was asked by a hotel where she was lodging if she could help them find a wedding planner. It soon became apparent that no one in Costa Rica was doing this type of specialized work.
Aimee, not one to overlook a great opportunity, decided to cash in her return flight and become Costa Rica’s very first professional wedding planner. 13 years later, Aimee is the owner of three Destination wedding companies, two in Costa Rica and one in Colorado. As of 2012, Aimee has helped planned over 1,000 weddings in her career. She is also Costa Rica’s very first Professional Wedding ConsultantTM.
She has paved the way for the region’s thriving, forward thinking and successful destination wedding industry. With her background in the resort and hotel industry, she has a seasoned expertise and knowledge in dealing with venues and their ability to host top-notch events.
Aimee splits her time between Costa Rica and Denver, Colorado, with her son Callum and her Border Collie Keeva. She oversees our US-based office, as well as all marketing and sales activities. She is also the Design Director of Tropical Occasions, spending most of her time coming up with creative ideas to make each of our events unique and reflective of our clients personalities — something that even after 16 years still gets her seriously excited. In other words, Aimee is a self-confessed wedding junkie; a planner who never tires of learning and sharing new trends and ideas (whether gleaned from seminars, magazines, blogs, or dreamed up on her own while designing and planning her events). She also remains closely involved in the execution side of the business and attends many of the events in Costa Rica. Aimee has also built what she she likes to call her ‘Super Power Wonder Team’, a staff of the best-of-the-best when it comes to offering premium service and knowledge about Costa Rica and unforgettable events.
Born in Asuncion, Paraguay, Anahi is the daughter of a diplomat and has had the opportunity to live in several countries including Belgium, Japan, Brazil, Canada and the USA. Raised as a globetrotter, she has mastered multiple languages and is the company’s linguist extraordinaire. After graduating from George Washington University, Anahi moved to Costa Rica to be with her family and shortly after began her career as an event planner. She’s worked in a plethora of roles and has planned numerous conferences, seminars, and visits for overseas dignitaries. After a few years her wanderlust caught up with her and she left the warmth of Costa Rica for a brief sojourn with event planning in chilly Montreal. It wasn’t long before Anahi and her husband returned to Costa Rica, thawed out, and joined the Tropical Occasions team in 2005. Her ability to communicate with anyone from anywhere–the mark of a true internationalist–or simply her genuine sweet smile, allows Anahi to elicit the best out of her vendors and teammates. Her unwavering positive outlook and incredible warm energy makes her a vital team leader. In 2010 Anahi and Aimee started a joint venture together in their favorite region of Costa Rica, Santa Teresa. They are now partners in Tropical Occasions’ sister company Santa Teresa Beach Weddings.
During this time, Anahi also took on a new role with Tropical Occasions as Lead Design Consultant, since this is where her true passions lie. It is in no way unusual to find Aimee and Anahi talking deep into the night about the cool things they’ve found on Pinterest, Elle Décor, a cool new design blog, and so on and so forth.
Karen grew up in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. But at a very young age it became clear that for some unexplained reason she was drawn to Latin American culture. In 2000, Karen finally left Canada for good and landed in Mexico. She made her way down the Central American coast and finally found her utopia in Costa Rica. Karen’s Costa Rican career began with managing a successful beachfront hotel in Manuel Antonio for over 5 years. She quickly gained heaps of organizational experience and a vast amount of knowledge about Costa Rica in general and the Mid-Pacific region in particular. Also during this time, Karen fell in love while salsa dancing and soon married her salsa dance partner, Alvin. She is now the mother of two wonderful children. When given free time, she still dances salsa with her husband, and continues to enjoy the beautiful beaches of Manuel Antonio with her family.
Karen is also perhaps the most diligent planner on the planet. Her incredible organizational skills and unearthly ability to be in four places at the same time make her a huge asset to the Tropical Occasions team.
Jaime comes from the beautiful coastal town of Cape Cod, Massachusetts and has a degree in Journalism from Georgia Perimeter College. While in school, she participated in a Spanish immersion program in Costa Rica and it was love at first sight. She also experienced love at first sight during a white water rafting trip where she met a cute tour guide named Rigo, whom she soon married and who is now the father of their two children. Jaime and Rigo have been raising their family in Costa Rica for the past 13 years.
For several years she managed a very popular restaurant in Tamarindo, which hosted a steady stream of weddings. On her days off, Jaime began freelancing with Tropical Occasions as a wedding assistant and another love affair was born. When the restaurant was sold, Jaime was looking for her next career move and Tropical Occasions brought her on full time. Jaime is now a die-hard wedding junkie. She absolutely loves working full-time in this field, meeting wonderful people and being part of the creative and logistical processes that bring to life beautiful, one-of-a kind events.
In her spare time, Jaime spends her days in the great outdoors; horseback riding, bike riding, kayaking or gardening. She is also our team’s arts and crafts guru, producing great work in numerous mediums, ranging from painting to sculpting to furniture design. She’s also passionate about eco-conservation, reforestation and permaculture, and is currently studying and becoming more involved with these issues in her local community. Jaime’s ever-present smile, endless creativity and laid back nature are adored by both her fellow planners and our clients. Needless to say, Tropical Occasions is overjoyed that Jaime is a part of our growing family.
